The aforementioned reforms in education—those that occurred during Tubman’s presidency—are perhaps the most significant reforms in the history of Liberian education.205

The Tubman era also embarked on a program of establishing boarding schools in the hinterland and interior of the country. The UNESCO mission has been actively involved in extending educational opportunity to the population of the hinterland. UNESCO participated in the 1950s with the Liberian government in a series of surveys to assess the needs of various villages in the hinterland in terms of education. After reviewing the results of the survey, UNESCO decided to set up the headquarters of its education mission at Dimeh-Amina, located about twenty miles outside Monrovia. UNESCO was responsible for the opening of ten schools in the hinterland area, which it has designated as the “Fundamental Education Area.” In addition to providing education in the basic skills, education is also provided in health education, vocational training, and scientific agriculture.206

Some of the mission schools were set up by various Christian denominations for the education of the people of the interior. One of the oldest mission schools in operation is the Lutheran Mission School. In 1945, it was elevated by the Liberian government from its elementary school status to a high school status. The curriculum of the Lutheran Mission School consisted of English, algebra, geometry, English literature, Latin, French, chemistry, physics, social studies, and religious instruction. Some of the activities provided for students were the following:

Y athletic team for girls

Hi Yi team for boys

The Lutheran League

Sewing and cooking for girls

Gardening for boys

Typing and choir for all207
